Aboriginal Naidoc Week 2021 Purple Turtle Lizard Bedding set

Three Macarthur students were honoured last Wednesday for their outstanding contribution to Aboriginal education in NSW public schools at the 2021 Nanga Mai Awards.

The 15th annual Nanga Mai awards, held virtually this year, celebrated the achievements of Aboriginal students and the continued commitment and accomplishments of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, school communities, and community members. The students were among 33 winners recognised across 17 categories. Aboriginal Naidoc Week 2021 Purple Turtle Lizard Bedding set

Natalya Hicks from Briar Road Public School received a Student Leadership Award.The 2020 school captain, Natalya performed her duties with great distinction and represented the school’s Junior AECG, led whole school NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week assemblies and facilitated cultural workshops to students across the school.

Natalya shared her knowledge of her Aboriginal culture in the Sista Speak program and also led the school’s girls Aboriginal dance group. She also received the prestigious ‘Mary Chatfield Aboriginal Education Award’.Her Briar Road Public School classmate, Yasmin Speakman, received the Outstanding Student Engagement Award for her leadership in Aboriginal culture and as a role model.

A natural leader and a proud member of the Junior AECG at the school, Yasmin also led cultural programs, like weaving for infants and primary school students, across the school and within the local community.

Yasmin was also involved in traditional dance while at Briar Road. Campbelltown Performing Arts High School’s Alexis Cherry received the Encouragement Award.Alexis successfully completed her HSC in 2020 and always demonstrated a genuine interest in learning.

She always performed and presented at NAIDOC week and Reconciliation Week assemblies and acted as a lead mentor for students who were struggling with transitioning into high school. Alexis was also regularly presented with principal’s awards for her continued efforts.Alexis is now studying nursing at Western Sydney University.

NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, said the prestigious event highlighted the outstanding qualities of public education in NSW and was a welcome celebration after a challenging 2020.
