The Sirens of Greek mythology were later known as the mermaid in folklore, although not all Sirens are mermaids, they may be a woman with bird wings. However, most stories and images today represent the Greek Siren in the form of a mermaid. In fact, in some languages it uses a word to refer to both fish and birds, much like Maltese language has the word ‘sirena’. Others refer to mythical or legendary objects such as nymphs or goddesses and sea dogs, which are capable of skinning it to turn into a human.
According to Greek mythology, Siren are creatures with a half-human and half-bird body and have a wonderful voice. Once, the goddess Hera held a singing contest between the mermaids Siren and the 9 goddesses of Muses – the goddesses of music who were the children of Dut and the wisdom god Mnemosyne. Unfortunately, the Siren mermaids lost and their feathers were cleaned up by the Muses to make clothes as a trophy. With no feathers left, the Sirens could not fly. The Sirens usually live on islands called Anthemoessa located between the waters of Sicily and Italy.
