HCB TICINO ROCKETS BASEBALL JERSEY
When it comes to playing sport here in the West Midlands most people opt for your obvious choices; football, cricket, rugby and tennis, to name a few. But for those looking for something a bit different, a new club could be right up your street.
Baseball is one of those American sports that seems to generally stay that side of the Atlantic, apart from a keen following in parts of East Asia. While other sports originating in the US have slowly transcended into UK culture, particularly Ice Hockey, American football and basketball, baseball has largely stayed on the sidelines.
But the founders of a new club hope to change all that. Warwickshire Baseball Club, the brainchild of pals Matt Johnson and David Millward, has been making great strides since starting just a few months ago. And they hope with enough players the team, based at Stockton Football and Cricket Club in Stockton, near Southam, will soon make it to fourth base.
Obligatory baseball pun out of the way, CoventryLive spoke with Matt to find out more – who can play, what are the benefits, and a whole lot in between. There was a distinct lack of baseball within Warwickshire, Matt said, when discussing the thought process behind the club.
So we decided to launch The Warwickshire Baseball Club in May . The club is going to be focusing on the introduction and development of the game in the county and surrounding area.
David and I met and played for a club based in Northamptonshire originally. Whilst we were there we always spoke and joked about the idea of launching a new club. After some further conversations it became apparent that actually it was something we should probably at least look into.
A few months on, dozens of people have been along to the new club and tried baseball. Thousands of pounds has been raised to start work on its own baseball pitch, or diamond as it is known in sporting circles, and the club even has friendlies coming up.
Matt said: It s quite overwhelming how popular it has been. When we launched we were hoping to have regular members by the end of the year.
We actually currently have full members with new guys joining weekly. We also have our first friendlies over the next few weeks which is around a year ahead of our original plan.
Speaking about the benefits, Matt continued: A lot of the players that join are looking to try something new, meet new people and gain a new hobby. And most people that attend the training sessions achieve this.
It s a great sport to play, it tests you both physically and mentally in turn having positive effects on both your mental and physical health. We have a very welcoming bunch of guys that attend, so each session is great fun.
But as well as fun the club has also made history with its new baseball diamond. Matt explained: One of our biggest achievements to date was successfully completing our crowdfunding campaign with a total of just over £,.
These funds were immediately put to use in funding the material cost of the diamond. The work itself is being conducted by the team and has been great fun so far! This diamond will be the first and currently only baseball diamond in Warwickshire.

Sound like it might be your kind of thing? Matt urges anyone and everyone to pop along and try it out. It is also hoped there will be a youth team next year, so Warwickshire could find itself with the next Babe Ruth.
Matt said: We are open to everyone and love having new people attending every week. If you fancy giving baseball a try then please do come along. We train on Wednesday evenings from .pm – pm and Sunday mornings from am – pm.
We will also be launching our new youth team next year to compliment the senior team. Find out more about Warwickshire Baseball Club here or on the club s page.
