Species of the New World Porcupine are generally much smaller than those of the Old World Porcupine, although the North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is up to 85 cm long and weighs 18 kg. Their feathers grow singly rather than in clusters and they climb very well, consuming a lot of time on the tree. The New World urchin species have evolved their spiny hairs independently (through convergent evolution) and are closely related to several other families in the Caviomorpha suborder. of the Rodent set than that of the Old World urchin.
In Vietnam, two types of porcupines are common. Mane porcupines are large urchins (adults can reach 25 kg) usually distributed in the northern mountains. The southern hedgehog (Don) has shorter hairs and a much smaller weight (about 9 kg in an adult). Currently, porcupine farming has become more popular in Vietnam because of less epidemics, high economic efficiency, and the use of cheap agricultural by-products.
