The Maine Coon is known as a “gentle giant” and has a higher level of intelligence than common ground, making it relatively easy to train. They are said to be loyal to their owners and vigilant – though not aggressive – to strangers, but are, however, quite independent and have no habit of sticking to their owners. They are also not easy-going cats, but with a gentle temperament the Maine Coon does not dislike the presence of other pets and children.
They are also playful cats, in which males appear more secluded and females are more mature, but generally likable. Many Maine Coons have an affinity for water, and some argue that this trait stems from the fact that their ancestors were frequently aboard ships during voyages. Another major trait of the Maine Coon is peeping, which includes meowing, chattering, chirping, and or “talking” (especially “answering” back to the owner).
