Gentoo penguins can be easily noticed by broad white stripes extending like a bonnet on the top of its head and its bright orange red bill. They have a pale white color, pink webbed feet and a fairly long tail the most prominent of all penguins. Young birds have a gray back with a white front.
Adult Gentoo penguins reach a height of 51–90 cm, making them the third largest of the penguins after two giants, the emperor penguin and the king penguin. Males have a maximum weight of about 8.5 kg (19 lb) just before shedding, and a minimum weight of about 4.9 kg (10.8 lb) just before mating. For females, the maximum weight is 8.2 kg (18 lb) before shedding, but their weight drops to at least 4.5 kg (10 lb) when protecting the chicks in the nest. Birds from the north were shaped, on average, 700 g taller and 10 cm taller than those of the south. Southern Gentoo penguins reach 75–80 cm in length. Gentoo penguins are adapted to very harsh cold climates.
