Wolf populations across North and Central Asia are largely unknown, but are estimated in the hundreds of thousands based on annual harvest. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the destruction of wolves across the continent has ceased, and the number of wolves has increased to around 25,000-30,000 animals across the former Soviet Union. It is thought that Kazakhstan is currently the country with the largest number of gray wolves in the world. In China and Mongolia, wolves are protected only in the sanctuary.
The wolf population in Mongolia is estimated at 10,000–30,000, while the wolf situation in China is more debris. The North has a decrease of about 400 wolves, while Xinjiang and Tibet hold about 10,000 and 2,000. In 2008, an authoritative reference stated that gray wolves can be found all over mainland China. In 2017, a comprehensive study found that gray wolves are present throughout mainland China, both in the past and today. It did exist in southern China, thereby countering some researchers in the Western world that wolves never existed in southern China.
